About Tungnath

Tungnath is considered the highest Shiva temple in the world. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) above sea level, Tungnath Temple is one of the most sacred and beautiful temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. Surrounded by magnificent Himalayan peaks and lush green meadows, the temple attracts thousands of devotees, trekkers, and nature lovers every year.

Tungnath is a significant part of the 'Panch Kedar'—a group of five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. After the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings to seek redemption for their sins. Lord Shiva, wishing to avoid them, assumed the form of a bull and vanished somewhere in the Himalayas according to Hindu mythology. One of the main attractions of the Tungnath Temple is the beautiful trek leading up to it. This trek begins at Chopta, a place often referred to as the "Mini Switzerland of India." Spanning approximately 3.5 kilometers, the trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty and offers magnificent views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Kedarnath.

This temple generally opens during the summer months specifically in April or May and remains open until October or November. Heavy snowfall occurs here during winter, and the idol of Lord Shiva is moved to Mukkumath village, where worship continues until the temple reopens.

Tungnath is also a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts and photographers beyond its religious significance. Many tourists continue their journey from Tungnath by trekking another 1.5 kilometers to reach Chandrashila Peak. This peak offers a magnificent 360-degree view of the Himalayan mountain ranges and is particularly renowned for its breathtaking sunrise and sunset vistas.
